The city of Cáceres inaugurated the ‘Alberto Ginés López’ climbing gym in February 2025, honoring the local athlete who secured Spain’s first Olympic gold in climbing at the Tokyo 2021 Games. This state-of-the-art climbing facility, located in the Ciudad Deportiva de Cáceres, boasts 1,000 square meters of climbing surface, accommodating the three main disciplines: speed climbing, bouldering, and lead climbing. The comfortable landings from the routes are ensured by Climbmat safety mats.
During the inauguration, Olympic gold medalist Alberto Ginés expressed his gratitude, recalling the sacrifices made in his journey, including relocating to Barcelona at 15 to pursue his passion for climbing. He voiced hope that this new gym would ease the path for future climbers from the region.
María Guardiola, the president of the Junta de Extremadura, highlighted that the climbing gym symbolizes values such as effort, resilience, and ambition, positioning Extremadura region at the forefront of climbing sports facilities. She remarked, “Climbing is a metaphor for life: a path full of obstacles that requires planning, courage, and perseverance.”
