Sustainability through Quality and Durability – The Walltopia Way
In a world increasingly conscious of sustainability, Walltopia stands out by redefining what it truly means to be eco-friendly. For us, sustainability transcends the mere recyclability of products; it's about creating long-lasting, quality solutions that significantly reduce waste and resource consumption. Our approach is simple yet profound: invest in products that endure. Join us as we delve into why durability is the new green wave and how Walltopia's dedication to excellence is helping for a more sustainable future in the climbing industry.
In an era where sustainability and eco-friendliness are a genuine necessity and not just fashionable trends, we feel these terms should be filled with deep meaning and practical solutions rather than be just a marketing strategy.
At Walltopia, we believe that true sustainability encompasses much more than mere recyclability of the products. Our philosophy on durability holds that the key to a sustainable future lies in the quality and life span of a product. Why invest in materials that are ostensibly “green” but require constant replacement and renewal? Instead, we create products meant to last decades, reducing the need for replacement and, by extension, waste.
Why Is Durability the New Green Wave?
- Resource Conservation: When a product endures, it saves not just the owner’s resources but also prevents the excessive use of raw materials for new products. This is economy in the truest sense – for both the wallet and the planet.
- Reduced Waste: Long-lasting products significantly lower the ecological footprint. Waste is minimized as the need to discard and replace becomes less frequent.
- Quality Focus: At Walltopia, we invest in high-quality materials and craftsmanship. This means our products withstand the test of time. What’s the point of having a “recyclable” product that fails every couple of years and requires constant replacement compared to one that could last 10-20 years? Longevity wins, not just for the consumer but for the environment as well.
- Sustainability in Maintenance: Our products are not just built to last; they’re also designed to be easy to maintain, which further extends their lifespan and reduces the environmental impact.
Recyclable materials and products
As pioneers in the climbing and adventure industries, we strive to implement environmentally-friendly solutions in our design and production wherever possible. As in the case of our new product in the climbing holds line: the new 100% Recyclable Thermoplastic Climbing Macros and Volumes. Walltopia Thermoplastic (TP) is our eco-conscious move towards fully recyclable climbing volumes and macros. Walltopia TP is actually made of recycled plastic and on top of its environmental friendliness, it rivals traditional materials in terms of strength, weight, grip and durability. Volumes are a fast-moving commodity, a consumable that sees a lot of use and its lifespan is short, meaning it needs to be broken down and recycled way sooner than any of the walls that they are installed on. This gives the new technology of thermoplastic a big advantage being fully recyclable.
Sustainability isn’t just about the materials we use; it is about making products that last, extending the cycle of consumption and reducing waste.
How Quality Translates into Durability
Over the past 25 years, Walltopia has designed and manufactured all our market-leading products in-house, establishing ourselves as pioneers. With this approach, we maintain full control over the manufacturing process, ensuring the highest quality and precision at every stage.
We have our own factories and in-house R&D, staying ahead of industry trends and technological advancements. We use the best possible materials and pay special attention to every detail. Our modern equipment and precise manufacturing processes ensure consistent high quality of every detail of the end product, which outperforms the standards in the climbing industry.
The support structures of our climbing walls are engineered to be extra sturdy. Our brilliant engineer team – the largest engineering department in the industry – consider the load capacity at every single point on every plane, at every angle, going beyond the standards to make sure that our facilities will be safe and super strong.
This is especially significant when it comes to outdoor climbing walls, which are exposed to UV rays, rain, snow and humidity. Here our long experience and strive for excellence come into play:
- Our polygonal multiangled panels are made of extra strong hardwood birch plywood. Consistent quality is ensured by automated coating and painting, water resistant and UV resistant coating being available as well. Wear resistance is an incredibly important property of the texture since it is the part with the highest depreciation rate and basically defines the facility’s life expectancy. We believe the texture should not wear off and should also keep its vivid colors for no less than 20 years. To control this process, we created a special procedure for the rapid testing of texture fatigue.
- We take extra care when plywood panels should be installed outdoors to prevent the shortening of the wall’s lifespan. Apart from using exterior plywood, which is protected from layers delamination in case they get wet, we impregnate the back of the panels. It’s not common practice in the industry to impregnate the back of the plywood panels installed outdoors. This can be very damaging as the humidity can spread within the panel and dramatically shorten its lifespan.
- However, even exterior plywood has a shorter lifespan, compared to the fiberglass and Walltopia premium outdoor panels. Introducing a new technology, our premium outdoor panels are highly durable and weatherproof, resistant to impact, water, heat and fire. The material does not change its characteristics over time while offering the precision, automation and speed of plywood production. The premium panels are also very easy to maintain compared to fiberglass as they allow change of individual panels with precise dimension up to 1 mm.
- Stainless steel t-nuts and screws. Most manufacturers often ignore these details, but in order to ensure maximum water resistance and durability for the product, we know our outdoor structures should be equipped with stainless steel t-nuts and stainless fixing screws. We produce the strongest T-nut on the market, TÜV Germany tested, certified under EN12572 standard.
- The metal support structure is another vulnerable part of outdoor climbing walls, especially in humid regions. It takes only about a year for the painted construction to start rusting. To prevent corrosion, we apply dual coating with hot-dip galvanization and UV resistant painting of all elements of our outdoor metal constructions. All fasteners used for assembling the elements are also stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized.
- We recommend adding roofs for outdoor climbing walls and boulders. The roof provides protection and extends the lifespan of the climbing wall panels and structure. It also offers better customer experience, allowing visitors to climb even in bad weather conditions.
- Ropes are a consumable with high depreciation rate and need to be replaced on a regular basis. To prolong their lifespan and keep the neat appearance of the wall at the same time, we have designed the thinnest rope protection strips available on the market. They preserve the aesthetic look of the wall, reduce the efforts in belaying and protect the protruding angles from the rope friction. Moreover, the belay bars, serving as a top station for both lead and top rope climbing, also extend the life of the ropes significantly.
